Making Portfolios Try Make Urs in Different Style

Portfolios

Most online portfolios look the same, says P McNeil. Why not make yours stand out from thcrowd?

Web Design, like any other form of design, goes through cycles. It's easy to argue that a certain style is the current tren - with a billion websites to chose from, it's not hard to find a dozen that 'prove' your point. For example, I could argue that the use of clouds in design is hot right now and show you 10 examples without bkinking. But is it really a trend?

Such is the case with the portfolio designs, You'll no doubts have seen many versions of the single - page folio with large attractive images, often containing a horizontal sliding JavaScript transition. Personally, I love this style of online portfolio, but this time around, i'd like to show you some examples os portfolios that rely on alternative designs and navigation layouts to make them sing ( while of course remaining highly functional).

Perhaps the primary reason to consider soing down this route is to cimmunicate the idea that your work is individual and stands our from the crowd. As always with web design, the focus must remain on usability , woth user experience thoroughly in the forefront.

If your goal is to stand out and present yourself in an atypical way, it's time to step back and look at your content through a fresh set of eyes. Consider the main functions the user would want: viewing your portfolio and being able to contact you are likely to be the top priorities, Starting from such a simple perspective can often lead to a design that's radically different from the norm.

The Work showcased here all make use of minimalism and atypical layouts, not just for the sake of it, but to speed up the user journey and improve the experience. One suspects they get more work from eager clients as a result.

I liked this information in the article in the magazine DOTnet for more information you can visit designmeltdownDOTcom to enhance your skills and information and also to know more & i liked to share the above here with you friends.

Bloggers Writing Nice Things About Products In Return For Freebies

America Fixes Blogging

Are the honest-blogging rules sinister or just stupid?

If you are fed up with bloggers writing nice things about products in return for freebies, we've got good news: America has banned such practices. Under new guidelines issued by the Federal Trade Commission, bloggers, Facebook posters and Twitter tweeters must disclose any money or freeebies they get in return for writing reviews. If they don't, they could be fined be fined up to $11,000.

The legislation has a similar intent to the EU's unfair commercial practices directive which makes it an offece for EU firms to pretend to be mere mortals when pushing products online - and like the EU directive, it's unlikely to make much difference to the way unethical firms behave. However, it has caused upset in the US, with many bloggers worriec that the FTC is up to something sinister. SlateDOTcom'S JackShafer reports that "The FTC would also take interest in blogs that keep Amazon Affiliates links on their pages or display an advertisement for the book under review". Shafer says that "allowing these guidelines to take effect would be like giving the government a no-knock warrant to investigate hundreds of thousand of blogs and hundreds of millions of Facebook, MySpace and Twitter users for sauing nice things about goods and services".

There are practical considerations too. How do you mention a vested interest in a 140-character Tweet? Is a free conference pass a bribe in the FTC's eyes? Given that 'proper' journalist aren't covered but bloggers are, how does that affect online writters for age-old print publications? As law professor Ann Althouse (althouseDOTblogspotDOTcom) puts it: "They've deliberately made a grotesquely overbroad rule, enough to sweep so many of us into technical violations, but we're supposed to feel soothed by the knowledge that government agents will decide who among us gets fined, No, no, no." I liked to share the above information with you friends as i find it usefull for the bloggers as when i read in the DOTnet magazine in the 'feed' category.

The Perfect ICON Designing

Design The Perfect ICON

The human race has been using icons as a form of communication ever since we painted cave walls over 100,000 years ago. We've continued to use them to this day, especially where space is limited, or a meaning needs to be communicated very quickly. They're not only a way of making a quick, concise statement, but they also overcome language barriers. Anyone who's ever tried to find a toilet in an unfamiliar country will appreciate that. I read this article in the DOTnetSLASHicons magazine, like to share the same with you.

Generating Online Website Traffic
The Truth About Generating Online Website Traffic

It is easy to build a website these days, with many of the free blogger networks offering everything from ready-made templates to HTML tutorials. It is that easy, but generating traffic to your website, well that’s another matter. With almost anyone propping up a website or two, getting the right amount of attention will take some effort on your part. It is, in a way, similar to a bookshop seeking customers. With many new ‘bestsellers’ vying for shelf-space, the only way these books get picked up is as a result of ‘getting the word out’. That phrase is the key to generating a healthy dose of internet traffic to your website. The major handicap that most internet marketers face is a lack of internet traffic, mainly because they failed to get the word out.

So let’s say that you have managed to get the website up and running, now the only thing left for you to do is to go on a marketing binge. Getting visitors to your website is the objective, that’s a given. So with that in mind, there are a few things that you can do to ensure that you achieve your objective.

You can start by incorporating a feed on your website, try ‘feedburner’ ( a google tool that allows blog owners and podcasters the ability to manage their RSS feeds and track usage of their subscribers), as that seems to be the popular choice and it is free to use – which is an additional incentive. The point is that any time you add fresh content to your site, it gets converted into a ‘feed’, making it possible for many feed subscribers to access it immediately. The whole idea behind the ‘feeds’ is that it makes content available to multiple internet users and provides content in real time, allowing you to garner some valuable traffic in the process. Now feeds are just a small step in the right direction. You will need to make sure that your site url is posted to the various search engines out there thereby increasing your site’s reach.

But the above method is utilized by nearly every webmaster and may not get you the huge increase in traffic that you are looking for. So here are a few additional strategies.

You can visit other websites; provide comments to blogs resulting in valuable one way links. You can utilize some of the paid traffic sites to increase your traffic. Though webmasters do use the paid traffic option as a marketing tool, it works only if the traffic provided is real and not one delivered by ‘web robots’ (used for web-spidering at a much higher speed than humanly possible). It’s essential that you check out the FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) page of the ‘paid traffic’ site to see if the site in question provides this source of traffic. If they do not, then you can be sure that the traffic delivered by such sites is not that beneficial.

Article marketing, now that’s a method that works seamlessly. The traffic generated by way of posting articles to some of the major article directories is so effective that webmasters have started using it for affiliate marketing, another cool way to make money as long as you are able to generate the traffic. But here is the catch, you need to be able to write well, for it is only a good article that will generate traffic. In addition to the directories, you can try your hand with some of the classified sites such as google and ebay OR utilize the benefits of google ad sense.

There is no doubt that marketing online will take a little effort on your part and it will be sometime before you can see some meaningful results. However at the end of the day, having worked through some of the approaches listed above, you should be able to generate a healthy dose of internet traffic to your site.

How to Become an SEO Expert

Search engine optimization (SEO) is more difficult than rocket science. Becoming a Jedi-level SEO master requires years of practice for most mere mortals, and like a Jedi, if one falls out of practice, one's skills quickly wane.

This is not a static science. Search algorithms change constantly, and as they are carefully protected secrets, one can never know what those designing the search engines are really doing under the hood.

No, it's not rocket science; A more apt analogy would be trying to reverse engineer a UFO that one can only see from afar, the specs of whose propulsion system constantly change.

Do not kid yourself: Becoming a genuine expert in this field is no easy task. In addition to all the knowledge needed, competition can literally be fierce. Your competitors may even actively sabotage you. One mistake can undo months of hard work.

If working on behalf of a client, you had better be darn sure that you keep your methods above board so that you do not get their site exiled to the far reaches of the Internet where it will never be found.

Meanwhile, some of your competitors will be using very underhanded techniques to try to make that happen. Like I said, it's hard to reach Jedi level, and once you do, you have to take care to stay on the bright side of the Force.

If you are in business, it is extremely important to choose the right SEO company or employee.

If you want to become the right SEO company or employee, here are a few suggestions on ways to train yourself (and being self-taught is the only way to do this):

1. Build at least five websites and administer them for at least a year. Keep each one separarate from the others, its own little sanitary petri dish not to be sullied.

2. Go about it scientifically. Test hypotheses rigorously until you have a few bona fide theories. Keep good records and track results. Take special note of changes in search engine behavior and the keywords and descriptions that draw your visitors. Connect those changes to your SEO activities.

3. Learn how to identify effective keywords. Despite what you may have heard, this is not as easy as finding words that are both searched for and non-competitive. It's best to be somewhat intuitive. What keyword combination are potential customers likely to use as opposed to bored or curious web surfers?

4. Use different tools until you find one that works. I have my favorite, but I'm not allowed to mention it in this article. Follow the link in my bio and surf around the blog. You should be able to determine what that tool is. Try it free.

5. Success before sales. Once you have at least 20 pages to the top for fairly competitive keywords, you can turn prospects into clients.

6. Play your cards somewhat close to your chest. Once you have some success, take a cue from the people who write the search algorithms and keep your exact methods to yourself. Also train and improve continuously so that your skills do not slip.

If you go through that training course, you will become a Jedi-level SEO expert who commands top dollar and deserves every penny.
